Czech music does not live only through Dvořák, Smetana, Janáček and Martinů. There are other remarkable personalities, for example Pavel Haas (1899–1944), whose life ended untimely in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Jiří Pauer (1919–2007), on the other hand, was fully occupied as the National Theatre’s Director, and consequently composed only rarely. Among his works are interesting operas and excellent instrumental concertos, including the one for horn that Radek Baborák will be unwrapping as a present for the composer’s 100th birth anniversary. He respects the conductor’s Andrey Boreyko’s willingness to search through these ‘unknown territories’. Shostakovich’s Babi Yar symphony, forever-topical is for Boreyko and for the bass Peter Migunov, from the Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, a piece with which they grew up.
