November 12, 1989 was the day when Agnes of Bohemia was canonized. It happened in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, at a time when even more important events unfolded in the then totalitarian Czechoslovakia. As a recollection of all this Martin Kumžák wrote a cantata dedicated to St. Agnes and there is, of course, no more suitable venue for its world premiere than Her house – the convent. Apart from leading Czech singers, an elite group of period instrument players will join in the performance. As Pope John Paul II then proclaimed: “Although Blessed Agnes of Bohemia lived at a time so distant in the past, she remains a shining example of Christian faith and heroic love.”
