ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK Rusalka Fantasy, arr. Manfred Honeck / Tomáš Ille (Czech premiere)
JOSEF SUK Symphony No. 2 in C minor Op. 27 "Asrael"
PRAGUE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Tomáš BRAUNER | conductor
For his programme, the leading Czech conductor Tomáš Brauner chose Suk’s Asrael Symphony and a Czech premiere of a Fantasy arrangement of the best-known Czech opera Rusalka. This Fantasy, based completely on Dvořák’s music, is a collaborative work of Manfred Honeck and Tomáš Ille, who wanted to bring the symphonic beauty of Rusalka to the concert podium. Judging from the success of premieres by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic it is working out. The close proximity of these two works feels natural; Suk in his symphony reminisces about his wife Otylka as well as his father-in-law Antonín, using quotes from the opera Rusalka.
