It was the year 1996 when, like a meteorite, Nikolai Demidenko landed in Smetana Hall. He completely filled the space, above all with his mind-blowing piano playing. Then FOK chief conductor Gaetano Delogu was by his side, and a few years later the brilliant Andrey Boreyko. Skriabin and Chopin resounded. It is for us a great honour to welcome Nikolai back after almost a decade. This time he will immerse himself into the regal Second Concerto by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Of course, he will not tackle it by himself, but will be in the company of another fan of Russian music, Petr Altrichter, who will ‘prove his faith’ in the second half of the evening with the performance of his dream piece, the monumental Eighth symphony by Shostakovich. This five-movement symphony is the sibling of Beethoven’s Fate and Mahler’s Second. Not many pieces of music reflect the upheaval of the 20th century so convincingly.
