Saint Nicholas, patron of children, tradesmen, sailors and apothecaries has become one of the most popular saints ever. He brings presents to children; goodness, comfort and protection to adults. Many churches and temples around Europe bear his name. Given that popularity, it comes as a surprise that this piece by the famous Italian baroque composer Bononcini – an excellent example of his collaboration with the librettist Silvio Stampiglia – is the only oratorio focusing on a chapter from Nicholas’s life. It became one of the most successful of Bononcini’s works. After its premiere in Rome in 1693, performances in Urbino, Florence, Lucca and Vienna followed. Today, on St. Nicholas’s day, we can commemorate his great deeds and hear the Czech premiere of this piece together.
