LITURGICAL CANONS FOR ST. SIMON AND ST. JUDE
Levon ESKENIAN | artistic leader
The church of St. Simon and St. Jude is a very well-known musical venue, so much so that we forget the uniqueness of its dedication. The two apostles are not patrons of any other sacral space in Prague. There is not much known about the lives of Simon Kananaois and Judas Thaddaeus; ancient sources document their shared missions in Armenia and Persia, where they died as martyrs. Although they are not important figures for the Czech lands, the Armenian Apostolic Church links its origin to Judas Thaddaeus. This is also behind the invitation of the renowned Armenian ensemble Gurdjieff Ensemble, who will remind us, and the church, who the subject of the altar painting by Václav Vavřinec Reiner is.
The concert is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Czech Republic and the Republic of Armenia (5 January, 1993).
