The world of Bach’s cantatas is inexhaustible; like Shakespeare’s dramas they exist in their own unique space and likewise, they depict all the moods of the human mind, especially the contemplative state. The Holy Week is the time to reflect the most. Adam Viktora, the expert on Bach’s work has chosen three pieces, all of which have something in common. All originated in Bach’s early residencies: Mühlhausen and Weimar; all offer beautiful choral planes, and in all of them we hear the wailing sound of recorders. For Bach himself the vast cantata Himmelskönig, sei willkommen meant the most – written as a celebration of the Lord on Palm Sunday on March 25, 1714, a holy day that coincided with the day commemorating the Annunciation of the Lord. In his secular life Bach enjoyed his eminent status at the Weimar court.
