Although the Italian Baroque master ANTONIO VIVALDI (1678 – 1741) is so popular today, his operas remain relatively unknown and underrated. Yet he wrote an enormous amount for the stage: in the years 1713 – 1739 he composed at least 44 operas, of which 22 have survived (in 1739 he himself mentioned the number 94). The operas of the “red abbé“ conquered European theatres in quick succession and as an impresario he earned considerable sums of money. After his death his works were soon all but forgotten, his music was rediscovered on a large scale only after the Second World War and his operas are only now starting to be fully appreciated.  Stagings of entire Vivaldi operas remain relatively rare even today but over the last ten years individual arias have become established parts of the repertoire of many singers and are ever more popular with the public. In their mastery of dramatic characterisation Vivaldi’s arias go far beyond the period conventions of opera serio and uniquely capture the unrepeatable mood of the moment. The soloist at today’s concert has chosen arias that are particularly interesting in terms of expression rather than already well-known virtusoso „hits“. She will sing arias from the operas Griselda, Orlando furioso, Arsilda, La verità in cimento, Ottone in villa and from the oratorio Juditha triumphans. The programme is complemented by instrumental concertos and sinfonias.
